Vorstellung Khnar Village Learning Center

I am very happy to present our new project to you today. Namely, the Khnar Village Learning
Center. As you know, we had to stop supporting the public school in Khnar in February 2017. The Ponheary Ly Foundation, our partner organization, did not want these children to no longer be able to attend the additional classes. That’s why Eyes Open finances this whole learning center. This means that 250 children can attend these additional classes here. The Cambodian curriculum includes reading, calculating and writing but other subjects are not included. The children in our learning
center also learn English, computer science, natural history, music, sports; all the things that would usually be in our curriculum. We know very well, as we do this in Switzerland or Europe, that the composition of technical and artistic subjects is incredibly important for the development of the children. And I am very happy to be able to show you today what the individual classes look like. Come along and discover together
with us our new Learning Center. Thank you for making all this possible! Of course we also set up the washing station in the Learning Center where the children wash their hands and feet before they start the lessons and you can see that this is being used extensively. Now we are in the crafting lesson. Today the kids are making a box like this. The lesson is taught today by Chenda. Chenda is our teacher of arts and crafts, she also teaches English and she is – very importantly – our school nurse. And I think you can see what a change
this is for the children, that they can craft here and deal with completely different topics. The new school year has started and
behind me you can see the new students one by one coming with a
copy of their birth certificate so they can sign up to attend our classes as well. As you can hear, there are also music lessons here so let’s go and see how the kids play ukulele here. So cool! While they are playing music next door,
we are here in the computer room, where we set up nine work stations. The power comes from solar panels which we have installed on the roof. And these classes take place mainly in the evening, therefore we cannot show any action here now. The children who were in the music class earlier now have English class. Take a look at what a Cambodian English class looks like. This class here is learning quite different skills, namely they learn chess. And when you watch these children, you see that they play extremely fast. After this lesson, they also go to English class. Meanwhile, we have arrived in natural history lessons. This is taught by Ka’Oun – I will introduce him now. This is Ka’Oun, our science teacher, he is also our chess and music teacher. After all, the point is that the school is an exciting place to which the children can come with joy and learn many new things and then everything else comes on its own. Because education is THE way out of poverty. We thank you very much that you are making a great place like this possible and that you are joining us on this journey! Many thanks!
