Congrats on deciding to complete your
education. A college degree can help you obtain a job that can lead to a
satisfying career, but you’ve probably already noticed how challenging it can
be to attend school online. In this video we will talk about challenges to online
learning and solutions using time management techniques, so you can be
successful. First let’s talk about the challenges. Many adult students have jobs, and some have families and jobs. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by
responsibilities. In addition to work and family duties, you now have to complete
assignments for school, and most of the time you have to do schoolwork at home.
You can attend seminar on the couch with your laptop or work on a paper at the
kitchen table. While this is very convenient, it does present new
challenges. Your family sees you at home and thinks you’re available. This can
cause a lot of interruptions. In order to be successful online, you need to have a
time, place, and routine for studying and doing other coursework. First of all,
since time is in short supply, it’s helpful to schedule school time and
stick to that schedule. Find the time that works best for you to complete your
schoolwork. This could mean getting up an hour earlier each morning or going to
bed a little later. Depending on your job, your lunch break may be a good study
time. You can schedule your school time using a calendar or list. There are a
number of different calendars you can use. Some prefer to use a paper calendar,
and others prefer digital. Here’s a digital calendar. You can view it by
month, week, or day. Electronic calendars like this can be synced to smart phones and tablets. You can also set alarms on calendar items to alert you
when a task needs to be completed. In addition to or instead of a calendar, a
simple to-do list can help you plan your school work. You can make a list on paper like in a notebook, or you can use your smartphone or computer’s note app. Here’s a list made using the notes application on a Mac computer. With this application, you can share your notes via email. Your notes can also be synced to different
devices such as tablets and smartphones. Once you settle on a time and schedule
or list your priorities, then you must find a place. It’s important to find a
good place for studying and completing other schoolwork. Do you have an
office with a door at home? Perhaps a local library would work better. Also,
don’t forget about the local coffee houses. They can make great locations for completing schoolwork. In order to stay on schedule and use your time the best,
it’s also important to develop a routine. For example, it’s a good idea to do all
of the reading each week before attempting to participate in the
discussion board or completing the other assignments. Using a calendar or list to
plan your time can help you keep a routine. Now it’s time to create your own
time management plan. Take a few moments to jot down your plan to stay on task
and achieve your goals. Include a schedule, a location, and a routine, and
you will be off to a great start.
