[MUSIC] Commitment.
Opportunity. Persistence. Ambition. Determination. These words characterize
students who return to school at the Adult Learning Center. The Adult Learning Center at North Shore
Community College provides students with educational opportunities to improve
their basic academic skills. Enabling them to pursue higher
education or a new career. We offer multiple levels of classes to
help student achieve their high school diploma equivalency in order
to enroll in college, or a career credential training program. Professional instructors,
experienced tutors and advisers work as a team to support
individual student growth. Our adult career pathways program
serves students who have an interest in the healthcare field. People who are at least 16 years old, are
not currently enrolled in high school, and are ready to take their next
steps in life, can attend. [MUSIC]>>I know sometimes it’s really difficult,
but put in your mind like
nothing is difficult. Nothing’s impossible. The word, by themselves,
say I’m possible, I’m possible!>>If I was saying it to a friend, I would tell them if you really want
something then you are gonna go for it.>>I would encourage them to think
about their situation again. And try it again. And take one day at at time.>>If you have the time, and
the opportunity is there, I suggest you take advantage of it. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Just walk through the door.>>They need to just follow their gut and
go for it because you’re the only one who’s gonna change what your outcome’s gonna be. [MUSIC]>>Make sure I have the schedule for it. But if you create time for
it, you can do it. First thing you have to do the schedule
and say this time, this time, that for my children, this time,
this time is for my school. It worked for
me because of that I have a dream. Before my high school diploma,
I cannot pursue my dream, right? The time is now, before it’s too late.>>Well, I have kids myself, and
I want them to have a better life. And better schooling, and
a better education themselves, so. I’ll have to be a better role model and
do what I have to do with my life to stay in school and get my education,
and education is key. Without education you can’t do
anything to succeed in life. So that’s why going back to school, for
me, was the best thing could ever done. And worth it for
me because it’s something I want to do something I wanted to do for
a long time. And this place provided a perfect
opportunity for me to do it.>>It was worth it cuz you set
aside your goals and achievements. I wouldn’t say I managed it but
I got done what I needed to do. The kids come sick you gotta put
your priorities with your kids but keep doing the work. Keep doing it and
keep going ahead forward. [MUSIC]>>It’s really amazing. Especially my teachers. They’re always reading for
me I feel like they are my parents. You know parents they always want
the best for their children. Like it amaze me really, wow. This also reminds of my classmates. Sometimes they will always be there for
me when I need something, when there’s really need. They get your back. I feel like I’m on my house,
always welcome. They will always be there for
me at any time I want. That’s why it’s so special for me.>>It’s like a family because
everyone helps you out one way. Once you meet new friends you
start hanging out with them. The teachers, they treat you
like your aunts, towards me and other students yeah that’s how I see it. They give you motivation like the way
they say things and the way they word it. How they tell you you’re
gonna make it through this. That helps a lot.>>Special thing is the teachers make sure
you’re there to learn and better yourself. Constantly helping me with situations
I don’t understand at the time and keeping in contact with me.>>Everybody is there for the same goal. To achieve, the same thing and
teachers are very supportive. And they wanna see you do well and
the students are supportive too.>>Their always there if you needed help,
they always encourage you to come. There’s plenty there for
you to get if you want it. But if you don’t want it then you’re
not gonna get nothing out of it. [MUSIC]>>For one it’s free. Two they have wonderful, awesome teachers. And from three,
you get better in your education.>>I remember when I was in Florida and I was just getting from Haiti. I didn’t speak English,
I didn’t understand nothing. I cannot say it was difficult because of
my teachers, but it was so difficult for me because of other students. Is it only me, like some people
from other country like Cuba, Mexico, South America, it was so difficult
for us because other students would make fun of us like they always say get back
to your country, something like that. But I know, I came here, I put on my mind. I don’t come here because of the students, I came because I want to
get my school diploma. I want to get a better future,
I know that nothing’s easy. I’m not gonna let them put me down. I’m gonna do my best, sacrifice myself, always do my homework,
always get my good grades. That’s how they’re gonna respect me. But the difference between here and where I was before is so different
because here I feel like I’m in my house. I’m welcome. Like, my teachers, my classmates.>>Thinking about my future and
how it’s gonna affect me later on in life. Say, if I didn’t get my GED,
I wouldn’t be in school right now. And I’d probably be working on a job. And later on life,
that’s not gonna support me and my family. Also, my sister because,
I need to support her. So this is just an up boost to
what you are trying to do in life. It is a big push. Once you come here. You learn one thing after another and
it just gets you ready for the next move that you’re going on to. When I’m learning something and I learn something new, it gets me
motivated to learn more things in life. Once you learn one thing,
you want to learn more and more and more. So, I find that very helpful.>>There’s no pressure there. It makes it easy for you and the support from the teachers. And there’s a lot to gain.>>Well,
when I first went there they sat down. They told you all about it. What was gonna go on. The guidelines and what they needed and
expected from you. So you knew what was expected of you. The program’s free and
it’s bringing a bunch of resources so that later on, you can continue on,
and do other things, and they have the resources
here to help you out with that.>>[MUSIC]>>Attending regular high
school is way more stressful, the teachers they’ll keep going
upon subject upon subject. Here, they won’t keep going until you know
exactly what you are trying to get to. Say in math, back at PBT High School,
it wasn’t good because the teachers they
would just keep on going. And if I get stuck up on a question then
I’m just going to keep on falling behind. Here they show you it straight
out on the board hands on. And that’s what helps out. It gives you the opportunity
to learn a lot more.>>In high school a lot
of students in the class compared to the LC class, fewer students. So teachers got more time to
go around to each student. It’s wonderful to denote different
people from different places and also learn things
from my classmates too.>>Well it’s different
because you’re at a different place in your life and you bring a lot of lifelong learning experience. And you can apply that too,
what you are trying to achieve today.>>Well, since I haven’t been in regular
high school for a while, it’s tough but I dropped out as a kid cuz fooling
around was better than going to school. So, but I realized later on in life, that
a high school diploma is really important and I think for kids nowadays there’s a
lot of drama that goes on it’s school and at the Adult Learning Center
it’s not drama. You’re adults, you’re there for
school and nothing else. [MUSIC]>>My dream I like to be a nurse. And I know that without my high
school diploma, I can’t be a nurse.>>I’m looking for
my bachelor’s degree but it’s hard so I’m gonna have to put in a lot of work. But I’m motivated for it. And if I stumble upon anything and
hopefully I keep going, cuz that’s what you have
to do to make it through.>>Basically I have a lot of goals,
maybe some day wanna take up a career in electrician or
do something else plumbing. But going to North Shore Community College
would definitely point me in the right direction. And it helped me out. So maybe in the future,
I can recommend it for other people.>>My goal is to get a degree
in business management. And I want to improve my reading and
writing skills. And my computer skills. So I think those things will help me
going forward in achieving that goal.>>Well first I got my diploma,
they helped me with that. Then they showed me what was out there
as far as North Shore Community College. I’m now a full-time student at
North Shore Community College. And I’m hoping to get a certificate
in biotech and then my associates. So it’s helped me along the way to show
me what was out there and what I needed. [MUSIC]>>Like you get the opportunity free,
go for it. I know sometimes it might be difficult for
you, your gonna be great. Or because you’re getting new jobs, and
I don’t need a high school diploma. Yes, you’re gonna need it. You probably don’t need it today, but tomorrow you don’t know
what’s gonna happen, to you?>>I thank North Shore Community College
for helping me become a greater student. Mentally too I learned a lot from Math, English, Social Studies, from even life. It’s a great opportunity to take. You don’t get a lot of
opportunities like this in life.>>If you don’t have the education,
you definitely won’t move further in life. So stopping by North Shore Community
College and checking it out. Definetly that’s the first
step in success right there.>>I think the first step is getting
in that door and starting and you will be surprised on how
much you can accomplish.>>I want to be a nurse and
I’m gonna be a nurse. I will do it because of my
teachers you pushed me. Yeah I’m gonna make it. The time is now. [MUSIC]
