Innovating Your Institution

Modern students being digital natives, they’ve grown up having access to great
digital experiences. I think it’s important to try to replicate that kind
of digital experience while they’re on campus. Students really want to know kind
of how they’re doing and where they are in their progression. You can go and talk
to your adviser, but it wouldn’t be nice if you had an app that you could
actually just check progress or maybe something that was even prompting you if it
was time to adjust something. So the idea is that if we can make better use of
things like Internet of Things, the devices themselves they’re using, and
analytics to provide kind of a real-time view of of how they’re doing. That’s
something a lot of schools are starting to do. So a progression report, sort of.
We’ve seen everything from raising a red flag if students aren’t attending class, but
even going beyond that to knowing enough about the data itself to know based on
kind of what other students in similar situations, when they reach a certain
point, maybe some courses aren’t quite as likely to be the right fit for them
based on their goals, or where they’re trying to go, so this is a good goal. As
you think about how technology can help keep students safe, provide better kind
of clearer pathways and know what the end results are likely to be.
