InCites B&A: Identifying Peer Institutions

November 22, 2019 0 By Kody Olson

One method for identifying peer institutions
is to determine those which have a similar research output. Begin in the Explore Organizations
area with the target institution, and find the total number of Web of Science documents.
For example, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has 954 publications.
I can apply filters and thresholds to create a list of organizations which are similar.
I’m interested in Academic Institutions in the United States with a similar research
output. I’ll use Organization Type and Location, then apply thresholds for number of documents.
Use the slider bar to apply thresholds at intervals of 10,000 or click the number to
set a custom threshold. I’ll set a range of 800-1100 publications and click Update
Results. I can now select institutions for comparison.
I can use the Analyze tool to preview subject area strengths for these institutions to find
those that might have a similar research focus. Pin your peer institutions to the top and
then choose a metric for comparison. I’ll choose Normalized Citation Impact.
