BETTER LIFE AND OPPORTUNITIES, MANY WITH A HUNGER FOR EDUCATION. I CAME TO LOUISVILLE IN 1993. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME HERE IN KENTUCKY. COLIN: ROBERTO GONZALEZ BEGAN HIS JOURNEY AT THE BACKSIDE LEARNING CENTER AS A STUDENT 25 YEARS AGO. HE NOT ONLY EDUCATED HIMSELF AND HIS FAMILY, BUT MADE A WAY FOR HIS SONS TO EARN SECONDARY DEGREES. GONZALEZ ADMITS HE HAD TO SACRIFICE.>>IT IS A LOT OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE US HERE. THEY CAN COME, THEY CAN GO. THEY LEARN ENGLISH. COLIN: NOW GONZALEZ HELPS TO TEACH THE MORE THAN 500 PEOPLE WHO UTILIZE THE SERVICES AT THE BACKSIDE LEARNING CENTER. IT ALL REVOLVES AROUND EDUCATION.>>ENGLISH IS OUR BIG PROGRAM. WE ALSO OFFER TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE, JUST HELPING LEARN HOW TO USE A COMPUTER. WE HAVE CITIZENSHIP CLASSES FOR KIDS ANYWHERE FROM FIVE TO 18 THAT CAN COME AFTER SCHOOL ON TUESDAYS AND THURSDAYS TO RECEIVE HELP WITH THEIR HOMEWORK. OTHER ACADEMIC SUPPORT. COLIN: THE CENTER CATERS TO THE LIFESTYLE AND WORK SCHEDULE OF PARENTS WHO WORK ON THE BACKSIDE, SINCE THEY DON’T HAVE A TYPICAL SCHEDULE. OPENING EARLY AND SOMETIMES STAYING LATE WITH TWILIGHT RACES, THE CENTER OFFERS SERVICES WHENEVER THEY’RE NEEDED.>>WE SEE WHAT THEY ARE SACRIFICING TO SUPPORT THEIR FAMILIES, SO THAT THEIR CHILDREN CAN RECEIVE A GREAT EDUCATION.>>THESE ARE ONE OF THE HARDEST WORKING, MOST DEDICATED GROUPS OF INDIVIDUALS I HAVE EVER BEEN AROUND IN MY ATHLETIC CAREER. COLI NOW AS A STANDALONE NON-PROFIT, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHERRY STANLEY BELIEVES THE CENTER WILL BE ABLE OFFER MORE OPPORTUNITIES.
