A student’s guide to Lancaster University colleges
Lancaster University has eight unique
undergraduate colleges and one graduate college and when you’re thinking about
coming here to study you might ask yourself “so what is a college?”
I’m currently in my third year of study here and I can say from experiences that colleges
truly help give you a home away from home You’re assigned to a college when you first arrive here and it’s first and foremost your home. It’s
your community instead of a bigger campus It makes it easy for you to
connect with those around you Colleges are about the people you meet.
It’s a diverse community in a safe environment Each college has different types of accommodation and a 24 hours Porters Lodge where you can find the porters help you with mail, safety or any other concerns you might have. Every college has a bar. It’s designed to fit the individuality of each College and its people There’s great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere Each college has its own identity, and therefore its own unique events, such as Grizedale’s regular hog roasts. From movie nights to quizzes to bar crawls, your college is sure keep you busy in your free time. At the end of every year your college holds an Extrav where people from the college can come together for one big end of year celebration. Your college is also your sports team.
It’s for inter-college competitions and leagues Colleges also come with a social space such as a games room or a common room which is great if you fancy swapping the cocktail for a coffee and socialising a little bit Aside from your college porters and other members, your college and its students also elect students for leadership roles so everyone can get involved in planning and being part of it, like organising a social event or a sporting event or representing students in a larger campus issue Staff are also part colleges and each college has its own advisor team who can give you the support you need to
be your best self Now that you know a little bit more
about what colleges are maybe you can imagine yourself being part of this community, and part of Lancaster University.
